El autor de juegos de simulación bélica Fred Serval diserta sobre a raíz de la creación de su juego Red Flag over Paris: The Complexity of Simplicity: Wargames' Footprint and Historical Model w/ Fred Serval (22 noviembre 2022), en un vídeo de la Georgetown University Wargaming Society.
While working on Red Flag Over Paris, Fred Serval developed a concept of three dimensions of the board game footprint. Each dimension represents a part of the cost put on the player to be able to engage with the game: temporal, spatial, and cognitive. Designers can also use each dimension in different ways to develop the dynamics and narrative of their game. Based on (mostly) recent historical board game examples, this presentation will go through the three dimensions, describing their role in building a ludo-historic model and what aspects of game design they relate to. Fred Serval started his wargame design career in 2021 with the release of Red Flag Over Paris, published by GMT Games. He is active in the wargaming community, mainly through his YouTube channel Homo Ludens, and his work primarily focuses on the political aspects of military conflicts and their depiction in tabletop wargames. Accessibility is one of his focuses, especially in his design approach, which he achieves by limiting the footprints of his designs to make them approachable to wider audiences. He co-founded the Consim Game Jam, a collaborative game design event, and participated as a jury in the Zenobia Awards, which aim to highlight new designs and designers from diverse backgrounds.
